Starseeker Progress Updates

31st August 2006 - The testing server is back

Well I've got the test server back up again. It is currently running:

All the SQL tables are all back in place, but some are slightly out of date as I had made a few changes between the backup and when the drive dropped it's stack. I will be making the required modifications as I find problems, but at least I can get back to code develpement again.

28th August 2006 - A Black Day for the testing server

After a problem last week when I tried to upgrade and found that the installation CD was currupted, I had to go back and reinstall the older version of the OS. Everything went Ok as /home and /var were on other partitions, so all the data was safe.

Tonight however was another story. After a particularly long phone call with Max, I started the server and was greeted with "insert Boot Disk". The hard drive had fallen over completely. This time however, the problem was not one of partitions, because this disk housed /var. I had a lot of trial data which included player tables, ship tables, and generated planet data all ready for promotion after testing.

Well, back to the drawing board, and back to creating the tables before I can use my other tools to do the population again.

18th August 2006

OK So I snuck it in. Last night I uploaded the test star data and ran some tests on the php scan functions. Check out the Galaxy Scan option.

Remember that at the moment, the information returned is minimal and the values must be between 0 and 49 (50 x 50 cube).

14th August 2006

Conversion of all the tables to SQL is nearly finished, but in the transition I realised there needed to be some changes to make the table access routines cleaner and interact better. Now that I have identified what the new tablespaces should look like, I can start building the new ones.

I have successfully implemented php scan routines on the test server and it is now possible to search the galaxy and get readable information back. Once the SQL tables are re-implemented, I will transit them to the live server.

15th July 2006

I now have a local testing server set up with an SQL server operational. The process is now underway to transfer all the tabular data across into SQL on this server before being able to go live on planetrama's global server.

Coding is also underway for the web interface to the data. Shortly we should be able to browse the Starseeker universe across the net.

Testing of the final system generation code will also be underway, but there is now a little work to do to convert the access routines to run under SQL..

8th April 2006

Fixed an annoying problem in the star generation routines where conditional compilation in test cases where the random number generation routines when unseeded would generate a compiler warning message.

Still working on planet and planetary system generation routines.

25-26 March 2006

An initial test galaxy was generated. This galaxy is a 50 light year cube and contains 125,000 sectors each a one light year cube in which to adventure. There are 75228 sectors containing stars, and of these there are 66854 which have planetary systems.

Started work on Planet and planetary system generation routines.
